If robots.txt or your host blocks OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT search can’t read your pages. Blocking GPTBot, which collects training data, is a separate choice.

Ranking on Google but not showing up in ChatGPT happens because ChatGPT doesn’t list pages, it names a few businesses it can explain. If your site, reviews and listings don’t give it a clear reason to name you, it names someone who does, even if they rank below you on Google.

Between 7 and 27 October 2026, Plumbed Right in Perth received five form leads labelled as coming from ChatGPT. On 27 October, ChatGPT linked a customer straight to the quote section of their pipe repair page:

Why a competitor gets named and you don’t
Google’s ranking is about one page and one search. ChatGPT builds an answer from several sources at once, then names the businesses those sources describe clearly.

We saw this on our own business. When we checked on 20 October 2026, ChatGPT built its “best ServiceM8 partner” answer from the ServiceM8 partner directory and review counts, not from who ranks on Google.
The pattern owners describe online is the same: the business that gets named has more reviews ChatGPT can read and clearer prices, not the better Google ranking.

2. Is there a page for the job they asked about?
“Plumbing services” doesn’t match “cracked sewer pipe under the driveway”. A trenchless pipe repair page does.
3. Does each section have its own heading and anchor?
ChatGPT can send a customer to a section, not just a page. Plumbed Right’s #quote link worked because that section has its own anchor.
4. Can it read your reviews and listings?
Count your reviews against the business ChatGPT named, and work out the gap with our review calculator. Check your directory listings show the same name, phone and services.
5. Are your details right in the answer?
Ask ChatGPT for your phone number, hours and service area. If any are wrong, find the page or listing it came from and fix that source.

ChatGPT names the businesses its sources describe most clearly for that question. A competitor with more readable reviews, a page for the exact job, or more sites describing them can be named ahead of a business that ranks higher on Google.

Where does ChatGPT get its answer about local businesses?
When ChatGPT searches the web for an answer, it shows the sources it used under the reply. Open them. They are often directories, review sites and forums, not only the page that ranks first on Google, and they tell you what to fix.
What if ChatGPT gives out the wrong phone number for my business?
Find the page or listing the number came from and fix that source first. Old directory listings and old pages are the usual culprits. Then ask ChatGPT again once the fix has been live for a few weeks.
