Every SEO or Google Ads job leaves a record. You don’t need to understand the work to see whether it happened. You need your own logins and 15 minutes.

  1. Check who owns the accounts (2 minutes). Sign in with your business email and open the users list in each one. Search Console: Settings, then Users and permissions. Google Ads: Admin, then Access and security. Business Profile: Business Profile settings, then People and access. Your business should be the owner, or an admin on Google Ads. If you can’t get in at all, stop here and read how to recover marketing accounts from an agency.
  2. Open Google Ads change history (3 minutes). It’s in the Campaigns menu. It lists edits to your campaigns, ads and settings, who made them and when, going back two years. Set the range to the last 90 days. There’s no right number of changes, but a long gap while you’re paying for management is a fair question to ask.
  3. Open Search Console (5 minutes). Go to Performance, compare the last 3 months with the 3 months before, and look at searches that don’t include your business name. Are impressions for your service plus your town going up? Then check the Pages report: are new pages getting indexed?
  4. Ask for the list of changed pages (3 minutes). Email your agency: “Can you send the URLs of every page you’ve changed or added in the last 90 days, with the date?” Open each one. A good agency can answer that in a day.
  5. Count last month’s enquiries (2 minutes). How many calls and forms came from Google last month, and how many in the month before you started? If nobody can tell you, that is the finding.

// THE REPORT

What your monthly report should show

A report is there to answer four questions:

  • How many enquiries came in, and from where?
  • What did the agency change this month, and why?
  • What did each enquiry cost?
  • What’s the plan for next month?

Rankings, traffic and impressions are fine as supporting numbers. On their own, they don’t tell you whether the phone rang. A report can look busy every month and still never say what you got back.

The fix usually starts before the first invoice: agree in writing what “working” means. Calls and forms from Google, counted the same way every month.

// NO RESULTS

SEO agency not getting results? What to do next

Sometimes the work is happening and the results still aren’t. That’s a different problem, and it has three answers.

  • Keep them if the records match the report, they talk to you, and impressions or enquiries are moving up. New pages can take weeks to appear and months to settle, so six weeks is early.
  • Fix the brief if they’re busy on the wrong things: traffic for searches that don’t book jobs, or “conversions” that count page views. Agree one measure, in writing, and review it in 90 days.
  • Leave if there are no changes on the record, they hold logins you can’t get, or nobody can tell you what came in. Read how to switch marketing agency without losing rankings before you give notice.

If you’re still weighing whether SEO suits your business at all, this guide to judging SEO costs covers it.

Score your agency in 2 minutes

Ten questions on logins, reports, changes and contract terms. Score each one: Yes is 0, Not sure is 1, No is 2. Nothing is sent anywhere. Your score shows below as you answer.

  1. Is your business the owner of your Google Business Profile and Search Console, and an admin on Google Ads?Owner or admin, not just a user or manager.
  2. Is your website’s domain registered in your business’s name?For a .com.au, check auDA’s WHOIS.
  3. Did you and your agency agree in writing what “working” means before you started? For example, calls and forms from Google each month.
  4. Does your monthly report show how many enquiries came in, not just traffic and rankings?Calls and forms, by month.
  5. Could you name one thing they changed on your website, ads or Google profile in the last 30 days?A page, an ad, a photo, a setting.
  6. Have your enquiries from Google gone up since they started?Compare with the months before them.
  7. Does someone at the agency talk to you at least once a month and reply within two business days?A call, a meeting or a real email.
  8. Do you have a written list of what you get for your monthly fee?Not “SEO services”: the actual tasks.
  9. Could you leave with 30 days’ notice or less, without a payout fee?Check the agreement if you’re unsure.
  10. If you left tomorrow, would you keep the website, its content and the work they’ve done?Pages, links and directory listings.

Answer all 10 to see your score out of 20.

Question 1 or 2 is No

Before anything else, get your logins in your name

Whoever owns your Google accounts and domain decides what happens when you change agencies. Don’t give notice yet. Work through the free marketing account ownership checklist, then ask your agency for owner access as routine housekeeping. If they say no or go quiet, that’s a job for our Account Recovery ($490 + GST).

0 to 4

Looks like they’re doing the work

Keep them. At your next catch-up, ask for three things: the pages changed in the last 90 days, last month’s enquiry count and their plan for the next 90 days. Score them again in three months.

5 to 10

There are things you can’t see yet

That doesn’t mean your agency is doing nothing. It means you can’t tell. Email them this week for the same three things, plus a written definition of “working”. If the answers are thin after two weeks, get a second opinion. Started with them less than three months ago? It’s early. Ask for their 90-day plan before you judge them.

11 to 20

Check before your next invoice

Several things you’re paying for can’t be seen from where you sit. Get the records checked with a second opinion before you pay again. If you’ve already decided to leave, read how to switch without losing rankings before you give notice.

// WE CHECK IT FOR YOU

Agency Second Opinion: we check it for you

The Agency Second Opinion is a $290 + GST check of whether your current agency is doing the work you pay for. We log in with the access you give us, compare the records with what your report says, and give you one verdict: keep, fix or leave.

If your agency is doing the work, we’ll tell you to keep them. We sell marketing too, so you should know that up front. It’s why the verdict sticks to what the records show, and why “keep them” is an answer we give.

We don’t sell SEO retainers ourselves. Our SEO is a one-off project from $3,500 + GST, not a monthly retainer.

// WHAT WE CHECK

What the second opinion checks

  1. Ownership. Who is owner or admin on your domain, Google Ads, Analytics, Search Console, Google Business Profile and website.
  2. Activity. Every change on the record in the last 90 days: ads, website pages and your Google profile.
  3. Report against records. Each thing your report claims, checked against what the accounts show.
  4. Enquiries. What your tracking counts as a lead, and how many real calls and forms came from Google.
  5. The verdict. Keep, fix or leave, with the fixes to make first.

Who should not buy this

Locked out already? Start with the free marketing account ownership checklist or our Account Recovery ($490 + GST).

  • You started with the agency less than three months ago on new pages or a new campaign. It’s early. Run the 15-minute check, ask for their 90-day plan, and come back if the answers are thin.
  • You’re locked out of your own accounts. Get them back first with Account Recovery, or start with the free marketing account ownership checklist.
  • You want a free audit. We don’t review websites or ads for free. The scorecard on this page is free.
  • You need an expert report for a dispute or tribunal. This is a business check, not legal or expert evidence.

// QUESTIONS

Questions owners ask

Not sure the second opinion fits? Ask below before you pay.

Ask a question
How do I know if my SEO agency is actually doing anything?

Check the records, not the report. Google Ads change history, Search Console and your Google Business Profile all show what changed and when. Ask your agency for the URLs of every page changed in the last 90 days. If they can’t list them, or the records are empty, they probably aren’t doing much.

My SEO report is all graphs and no leads. Am I being ripped off?

Not necessarily, but you can’t tell from graphs. A useful report shows enquiries, where they came from, what changed and what’s next. If yours shows only rankings and traffic, ask for calls and forms from Google each month. If nobody can count them, that’s the problem to fix first.

How long should SEO take before I see results?

New pages can appear in Google within weeks and take months to settle, depending on how contested the search is. “SEO takes time” is true, but it should still leave a record of work every month. Six months with no changes on the record is not a timing problem.

I pay thousands a month for Google Ads. How do I check the agency is managing it?

Open Change history in your Google Ads account (it’s in the Campaigns menu) and set it to the last 90 days. It shows every edit and who made it. Then check the search terms you’re paying for and what counts as a conversion. Our Google Ads audit for tradies covers the ads in depth.

What does the Agency Second Opinion cost, and is it credited?

It’s $290 + GST, paid once. You get a recorded walkthrough, a keep, fix or leave verdict and a 15-minute call. The $290 + GST is credited once per business against the first month of any Web Blend monthly plan signed within 30 days of the audit.

Do you need my passwords, and will you tell my agency?

No and no. Never send a password or authentication code. Add us with the lowest access each platform offers, read-only where it exists. We don’t contact your agency. The verdict is yours to use however you like.
