Google Business Profile suspended for deceptive content

A Google Business Profile suspended for deceptive content doesn’t mean Google has decided you’re a scam. For licensed trades it usually means something on the profile didn’t line up with everything else Google can see, often straight after a new profile, a verification or a small edit. We fix what doesn’t line up, then appeal, and if Google asks for a video we run it on site, on the day, with our four-shot list.

A generic suspension notice for Example Plumbing Co giving deceptive content as the reason, above three numbered next steps: 1 fix what does not line up, name, address, link and phone; 2 then appeal, as appeals can only be submitted once; 3 a video on site, on the day, if Google asks Example
Example: a suspension notice and what to do next, in order. Drawn generic, not a copy of the Google notice. Illustration with a fictional business.

// WHAT IT MEANS

What “deceptive content” usually means for a trade

The notice rarely names the detail. From what trade owners report, the label lands most often on:

  • Brand new profiles, suspended within days of creation or verification.
  • Established profiles after an edit: a new website link, a tracking tag on the link, changed hours, a new category or a name change.
  • Home-service categories such as plumbing, air conditioning, electrical, garage doors and water damage.

// BEFORE THE APPEAL

Fix the mismatch before you appeal

Checklist titled check before you appeal: name matches registration and signage, address and service area match, phone answers at the business and only one profile for the business are ticked; profile link lands on your real site is unticked and circled, with a note saying fix this before the appeal Example
Example: the mismatch check, with one item still to fix before the appeal. Illustration with fictional data.

Google’s help on suspended profiles says appeals can only be submitted once. If Google looks again at the same mismatch, you get the same answer. So we check, against Google’s guidelines:

  • The business name matches your registration and signage, with no suburbs, taglines or extras added.
  • The address and service area match your website, its schema and your listings, and a service-area business hides its address.
  • The website link on the profile is your real site and lands on a page about this business.
  • The phone number answers at the business.
  • There’s only one profile for the business.

// THE VIDEO

When the appeal asks for a video

We request it and text the owner the link. On site, on the day, on their own phone, the owner films four shots in one take and submits it straight away. Only film what genuinely exists.

Illustrated shot list on four phone screens recording one take: 1 the road with the street sign and letterbox number, 2 the vehicle with the business name, 3 the door sign, 4 the desk with the computer on and the invoice numbers covered Example
Example: the four shots as one unbroken take, timer running from the road to the desk. No faces in frame, document numbers covered. Illustration with a fictional business.
  1. The road. Start at the street: the street sign, your letterbox and the house or unit number in frame.
  2. A vehicle with the business logo on it. Walk around it so the name can be read. Skip this shot if your work vehicle has no logo.
  3. The door with the business logo, or the sign on the window. Close enough to read the name. Skip it if there is no permanent sign.
  4. The office desk. Computer on with your business software or email open, and a business document such as an invoice or licence with the numbers covered. Someone can be at the desk, but keep faces out of shot.

Google's rules for the recording

  • One unedited, complete recording with no breaks, at least 30 seconds long. Film it as one walk from the road to the desk.
  • Recorded live through your Business Profile on your phone, at the business. Google doesn't accept a video recorded earlier and uploaded later.
  • The business name on any sign or vehicle has to match the name on the profile.
  • No bank, tax or ID numbers, no customer details on screen, and no other people's faces.

Never borrow a vehicle or put up a sign for the camera. Source: Google's video verification help, checked October 2026.

// QUESTIONS

Questions owners ask

Not sure which of these is yours? Ask us and we will give you a straight answer, including when you can fix it yourself.

Ask us to look at my suspension
What does deceptive content mean on a Google Business Profile?

It’s the label on the suspension notice when Google believes the profile misrepresents the business. In what owners post, the notice rarely says which detail triggered it, so the job is finding what doesn’t match.

Why was my brand new profile suspended for deceptive content?

New trade profiles getting suspended soon after creation or verification is one of the most common things owners post about. It usually comes down to a name, address or website detail that doesn’t match anything else Google can see.

Can changing my website link get my profile suspended?

Owners report exactly that, including after adding a tracking tag to the link. Before you change the link, make sure the new site shows the same business name, address and phone as the profile.

Will my Local Services Ads stop too?

Owners report Local Services Ads stopping when the profile is suspended, because the ads rely on the profile.

Should I start a new profile?

No. Google’s help says not to create a new Business Profile for the same business, and you’d leave your reviews behind.

Is this because I’m a plumber?

Home-service trades turn up in these reports far more than most categories. That’s a reason to keep the profile clean, not a reason it can’t be fixed.
