// CALL TRACKING
Find out which ad the phone call came from
For most trades the phone is where jobs get booked, and the phone is the one thing nobody measures. Call tracking gives you a tracked number, swaps the number on your site to match the source, and ties every call back to the ad, the page or the listing that earned it. $150 + GST a month, and it is already included in the Lead System.
// IN PLAIN ENGLISH
What call tracking actually is
It is a phone number that quietly reports where the caller came from. We set up a tracked number that rings the same phone you already answer, and the number shown on your website changes depending on how the visitor got there. When someone rings it, the call is logged against that source. You answer the call the way you always have. Afterwards you can see that the call came from a particular ad, a particular page, or your Google Business Profile, rather than guessing.
// THE PROBLEM
Calls are the conversions nobody counts
Form enquiries get tracked. Someone fills in the form, the tracking fires, and the lead shows up in the report next to the ad that caused it. Calls do not work like that. The phone rings, you take the job, and nothing anywhere records how that person found you.
So the numbers you make decisions on are missing the half that matters most. Ads that ring the phone look dead in the report and get switched off. Ads that only ever produced form fills look like the winners and get more budget. Meanwhile the honest answer to "where did that job come from?" is a shrug, or asking the customer and hoping they remember.
Call tracking closes that gap. It is the missing half of conversion tracking, and it is what makes the numbers on a Google Ads account worth acting on.
// WHAT YOU GET
Everything that turns a ring into a data point
Six things, all pointed at one outcome: you can say which ad, which page and which listing produced the calls, and back it up.
A tracked number of your own
You get an Australian number that rings the same phone you already answer. Nothing changes about how you take a call, only about what we can see afterwards.
Number swapping that stays NAP-safe
The visible number on the page changes to match where the visitor came from. Your structured data, your Google Business Profile and your citations keep your real number, always.
Every call tied back to its source
A call is logged against the ad, the page or the listing that earned it. Down to the campaign, and to the keyword where the number pool is big enough to resolve it.
Call recording, only if you ask for it
Recording is off unless you turn it on, and if you do we set up the notification the call needs. Attribution works either way, so you never have to record to get the numbers.
Calls counted next to forms
Phone enquiries land in the same report as form enquiries, so the lead total is the real total instead of only the people who bothered to type.
Set up and looked after for you
We stand up the number, wire the swap into the site, connect the reporting and keep it working. You get the numbers, not the admin of maintaining them.
// THE SEO QUESTION
Number swapping that will not touch your local rankings
If you have read that dynamic number insertion hurts local SEO, the concern behind it is real. Local ranking leans on your name, address and phone matching everywhere Google finds them, so a business that lets a tracked number leak into its listings and its structured data is asking for trouble.
We do not do it that way. The swap is deliberately limited to the visible page, where it is doing attribution work. Everything a search engine treats as your canonical business record keeps your real number, every time.
- The telephone value in your page structured data is always your real number, never the tracked one.
- Your Google Business Profile keeps your real number, and we never swap it.
- Directories, citations and anywhere else your details are listed keep your real number.
- The tracked number appears in the visible page only: the header, the call buttons and the enquiry block.
- Your real number keeps ringing the whole time, so nothing about your van, your invoices or your signage changes.
That is what NAP-safe means in practice. The attribution happens in the part of the page a visitor reads, and the record a search engine reads is left alone. If you want to see how the same discipline runs through the rest of the build, it is on our conversion websites page.
// CALL RECORDING
Recording is optional, and off unless you ask
Recording a phone call in Australia carries consent obligations, and they are not identical in every state and territory. It is not a switch to flick without thinking about it, so we leave it off by default.
If you decide you want it, we set up the notification so a caller is told before the conversation starts, and we make sure the recordings sit somewhere you control. Whether recording is the right call for your business, and what applies where you and your callers are, is worth checking with your own adviser. We will set it up properly, but we are not the ones who can sign it off for you.
None of this affects the attribution. Knowing a call came from a particular ad does not require listening to it, so you can leave recording off permanently and still get every number on this page.
// HOW IT WORKS
Four steps, then the phone reports for itself
Stand up the number
We set up a tracked number and point it at the phone that already rings. Same handset, same ringtone, same way you answer it.
Swap it on the site
The number in the visible page swaps to match the source of the visit. The structured data and your business listings keep your real number untouched.
Match the call to the source
Every call through the tracked number is recorded against the ad, the page or the listing that sent the visitor to you.
Read it every month
Calls sit beside form enquiries in one plain report, so you can finally answer which ads paid for themselves and which ones did not.
// PRICING
$150 + GST a month, or nothing extra on the Lead System
Call tracking on its own is $150 + GST a month. That covers the tracked number, the setup, the number swapping on your site and the reporting. Same figure every month, agreed before we start, and no setup fee bolted on the front.
If you are on the Lead System, call tracking is already in it at no extra cost. There is nothing to add and nothing more to pay. The $150 + GST is only for taking call tracking by itself, without the rest of the engine.
What it does not cover: your ad budget, which goes straight to Google and never through us, and any other service on this site. Call tracking is one line item, not a bundle. It is also not a replacement for your business phone line, it sits alongside it.
// WHERE IT FITS
Best when it sits next to the spend
Call tracking earns its keep fastest when there is money moving. Pair it with Google Ads management and every dollar has a call count against it, not just a click count. Pair it with conversion tracking and the phone finally shows up in the same report as the forms.
It also pairs with the thing that stops a tracked call being a wasted one. If the phone rings while you are on the tools, an instant text back keeps the lead warm until you can ring them, which we cover on our missed call text back for tradies page and as part of our automation work. Knowing where a call came from is worth more when you did not lose it.
// QUESTIONS
Straight answers before you ask
Not sure whether a swapping number is safe, or whether recording is something you want on? Ask us directly and we'll give you a straight answer, no jargon, no pressure.
Get in touchWill a swapping phone number hurt my local SEO?
Not the way we set it up. The worry is fair, because local ranking leans on your business name, address and phone matching everywhere Google finds them. So we never touch the record. The tracked number appears in the visible page for attribution, while the phone number in the page structured data, in your Google Business Profile, in your directory listings and in the footer contact block stays your real number. Nothing a search engine reads as your canonical business record ever changes.
Do you record my calls?
Only if you ask us to. Recording is off by default. In Australia, recording a phone call carries consent obligations and those obligations are not identical in every state and territory, so it is not something to switch on casually. If you do want it, we set up the notification so callers are told before the conversation starts, and we recommend you check the obligations that apply to you and your callers with your own adviser. Attribution does not depend on recording, so you can have the full picture of where calls come from with recording left off.
What happens to my real number?
It stays exactly as it is. Your real number keeps ringing, keeps appearing on your van, your invoices, your signage and your Google Business Profile, and nobody has to memorise a new one. The tracked number is an extra path into the same phone, not a replacement for your business line. If you ever stop call tracking, the visible number simply goes back to your real one.
Is this included in the Lead System?
Yes, at no extra cost. Call tracking is already part of the Lead System, so if you are on that there is nothing more to pay for it. The $150 + GST a month price is for taking call tracking on its own, without the rest of the engine.
Do I need to be running ads for this to be worth it?
No. Call tracking works for any source that sends people to your site: Google Ads, organic search, your Google Business Profile, or a directory listing. It is most useful when you are spending money, because that is when knowing the source changes what you do next, but plenty of businesses use it just to find out which pages and listings actually make the phone ring.
How do you stop wrong numbers being counted as leads?
We set a minimum call length, so a ten-second wrong number does not land in the report next to a real enquiry. You can also see the calls individually rather than only the total, which means the number you report on is one you can stand behind.
Does this replace missed-call text-back?
No, they do different jobs. Call tracking tells you where a call came from. Missed-call text-back makes sure a call you could not answer does not turn into a lost job. They work well together, and text-back is covered on our missed call text back for tradies page and as part of our automation service.
