// THE DATA

Hourly rates in detail

Tiler hourly rates run $45 to $120 with an average around $70 (TradieVerify, 22 Mar 2026), and ServiceSeeking's marketplace band of $45 to $100 matches. ServiceTasker splits the market in a useful way: indoor tiling at $45 to $100 per hour averaging $60, outdoor tiling at $40 to $60 averaging $45. Sydney and Melbourne run 15 to 25% above regional prices, though that premium is single-sourced.

One caution: a $50 per hour Sydney figure on Airtasker's tiler page reads as worker earnings rather than a charge-out rate, and it is excluded here.

// PER SQUARE METRE

Per square metre rates in detail

Per square metre is tiling's native pricing unit: 66% of 2026 tiling quotes are per square metre. Labour runs $40 to $120 per square metre with $65 typical (TradieVerify, 22 Mar 2026), ServiceSeeking's 2026 average is $65.80, and Service.com.au agrees with a $40 to $120 band averaging $60 to $80 (11 Sep 2025). Three consistent sources make this the best-evidenced number on the page.

City medians are per square metre installed, not labour-only, and come from a single source (Airtasker, 17 Mar 2025). The $72 national median, inside a $44 to $101 range, is consistent with the labour-only sources above.

// MINIMUM CHARGES

Minimum charges

Tilers work to minimum charges rather than call-out fees, and the one published 2026 figure puts that minimum at around $300 to $500 (TradieVerify, 22 Mar 2026). It is single-sourced, so treat the amount as indicative, but the structure it describes is standard: small repairs are priced at or near the minimum regardless of the area tiled.

// DAY RATES

Day rates

Day rates barely exist in tiling: only 9% of quotes are daily, and the single published figure is a $604.60 average from $120 per day (ServiceSeeking, 11 Feb 2026). With one thin source behind it, use the per-metre and hourly figures above for anything that matters.

// THE COST FLOOR

Why rates are what they are: the cost floor

An employed tiler's award minimum wage, including all-purpose allowances, is $31.95 per hour (Fair Work, Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020 (MA000020), 2026). The rate a tiler business charges customers is $45 to $120 per hour. The difference pays for the ute, insurance, tools, super, unbillable hours and the business's risk.

From the $31.95 award floor, adding 12% super gives $35.78 an hour as the bare cost of employing a qualified tiler. A $40 hourly rate leaves about $4 for tools, vehicle, insurance and quoting time combined, which is why minimum charges and $65-a-metre labour pricing exist.

The $35.78 employee-cost figure is a derivation, the award hourly rate multiplied by 1.12 for the Superannuation Guarantee, not a published statistic. Award classification: Level 3 (CW/ECW 3), weekly hire, residential, incl. industry and tool allowance (pay guide lists carpenter, joiner, tilelayer at this level).

Do tilers charge a day rate?

Do tilers charge GST on top?

Quoted prices are generally GST-inclusive where the tiling business is registered for GST, which is the convention on this page. On larger jobs, confirm the written quote states GST is included across both labour and materials lines.
